In 2006, Albin Exterminating was the first independently owned company in the Coastal Bend to earn the prestigious Quality-Pro designation from the National Pest Management Association. In mid-2008 Albin Exterminating was chosen to withdraw its membership from both the National Association and the Texas Pest Control Association, thereby giving up the Quality-Pro designation. We did maintain the high standards required for the designation, and hope to re-apply at some point.
The reason for our decision was that the TPCA has exceedingly lax standards for membership, and companies that operated in a less than ethical way were still welcomed in as members as long as they paid their $75 membership fee. Since there was a reciprocal agreement between the two associations, we could not leave one without giving up membership to the other. This membership was forcing us to be associated with companies whether or not they had the same high standards as Albin Exterminating.
This was a difficult decision, but we just could not participate in an organization (TPCA) that allows unethical operators to cast a shadow on our reputation.
Did NPMA do good things for the industry? Absolutely! Did TPCA do good things for the industry? Without question. But this one issue is far too significant to be ignored. TPCA has indicated that they would be working on this issue. Once resolved, Albin Exterminating will again become a participating member of both associations.
